War is Declared!
Newspaper HeadlineResource Details and Teaching Ideas
Show the children a newspaper article from the time, announcing the declaration of war. You could discuss and brainstormed other headlines that they could have used to announce that war had broken out. The children can work in pairs, in groups or individually to create war announcement posters. A follow-on lesson could be to write a headline and a short newspaper article on the topic in response to Chamberlin's speech. PowerPointResource Details

Give the children background information about Neville Chamberlain, who he was and what he did. Listen to the announcement and discuss it. Reflect on what has been said. How would the people have felt at the time? Why? How would Neville Chamberlain have felt? How would we feel or react if our president Michael D. Higgins made an announcement like this today? Children really enjoy this as it puts in perspective for them how the war may have affected the people in Britain at the time.
Teaching Ideas
Children could find the countries involved on a map or a globe. Children could do group research projects on the different countries involved in the war to find out who was the leaders of these countries, the flags of these countries and any interesting facts the can find out about them. |
